[ARCHIVED] Railway Crossing Capital Project, road closure information and more

Railway Crossing Capital Project

The City of North Bend and the Northwest Railway Museum are working together on the Railway Crossing Capital Project, a federal grant-funded project that, once complete, will improve a total of four railway crossings in North Bend.

Following the Council’s unanimous approval of the resolution authorizing the agreement at the October 7, 2025 City Council meeting, two of these railway crossing projects will begin within the coming month. Please take note of the following round-the-clock road closures:

  • ROAD CLOSURE – State Route 202/Bendigo Boulevard, between W Park Street and W North Bend Way: From 7 p.m. Sunday, October 26, through 5 a.m. Friday, October 31
  • ROAD CLOSURE – Main Avenue S, between W Park Street and E McClellan Street: From 7 p.m. Sunday, November 2, through 5 a.m. Friday, November 7

Crews from contractor, Stacy Witbeck, will work during daytime and nighttime hours, with the goal of completing each project as quickly and efficiently as possible. Drivers can expect clearly marked detours and messaging boards with information at each location. Messaging boards will be installed seven days prior to each road closure.

Beginning Monday October 13, residents may notice activity at 248 Bendigo Boulevard S, on the north side of the former Bartells Drug Store. Crews will be installing a silt fence and preparing the worksite. As construction continues, loud noise, traffic delays, vibration, and large vehicles will be present in the vicinity of each project site.

Later in November, Stacy Witbeck crews will begin work on two additional railway crossings, located on NW 8th Street, near Alm Way, and North Bend Way, near Tollgate Park. The city will continue to provide community updates as construction dates are finalized.

The project is a result of a $4.8 million 2023 Rail-Highway Crossing Program grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Once finished, the four railway crossings will enhance quality of travel and safety with new concrete panels, tracks, crossing gates, signals and cantilevered flashing lights. In addition, the tracks between SR 202/Bendigo Boulevard and Main Avenue will be relocated approximately 14 feet south along McClellan Avenue to make room for future parking improvements on the avenue.

Thank you for your patience as crews work to complete the Railway Crossing Capital Project.
