[ARCHIVED] May is Wildfire Awareness Month in North Bend

Mayor Miller is proud to proclaim May as Wildfire Awareness Month in North Bend. She read her proclamation at the May 6 City Council meeting, where she encouraged residents to work together to improve the survivability of our community by learning about and engaging in preparedness for wildfire.

As wildfire season grows longer and more destructive throughout Washington State, our community is working to increase their preparedness to survive wildfire by preparing our homes and talking to neighbors of all ages about the dangers of wildfire.

Our communities – especially communities including but not limited to seniors, low-income residents and those with disabilities and functional needs – have become increasingly susceptible to wildfire with higher temperatures, decreasing summer rain and earlier snowmelt. This has elevated the need for wildfire prevention and preparedness at both the community and individual homeowner levels.

When an entire community implements pre-fire activities such as evacuation planning, adding defensible space on our properties and home hardening, we improve the survivability of our individual homes and our surrounding community during wildfire.
