Sewer System

WWTP HPI, Complete, 06.17.24-02

The City’s sewer system historically served a relatively small population close to the downtown area. The Utility Local Improvement District (ULID) No. 6 expansion resulted in sewer service being extended into the Tanner and Truck Town areas. Approximately 2,370 residents are currently served by the City’s wastewater collection system.

In 2024, the city completed a major, multi-year project to upgrade its aging Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The two-phase WWTP High Priorities Improvement Project increases redundancy, makes multiple safety and environmental upgrades and adds capacity for all future commercial and residential growth.

The Wastewater System Facilities Plan (PDF) was completed in November of 2017, and adopted by Ordinance 1654 at the February 6, 2018 City Council Meeting.

WWTP Tours 2025

...Have you ever wanted to learn more about wastewater infrastructure?

...Have you ever wondered how chemistry and biology are used in our local wastewater treatment processes?

...Have you ever thought what happens when you flush your toilet?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, then the City would like to invite you for a free tour of the City’s recently re-constructed Wastewater Treatment Plant!

If you are interested, please email Carrie Smith at csmith@northbendwa.gov and you will be added to a sign-up list. Once 15 people sign up, a WWTP tour date and time will be scheduled by city staff approximately one or two months in advance, and you will be alerted of the tour date and time to see if you can attend. Tour duration will last approximately one hour.  Tours will generally be provided mid-to-late afternoon.

The WWTP is located at 400 Bendigo Blvd. N, and tours will occur quarterly. If you are unable to attend, the City will schedule more in the future, as each sign-up list reaches the 15-registrant requirement.

Rules of the WWTP Tour:

  1. Public intoxication is not allowed. If City staff believe you are impaired, then you will be asked to leave the premises.
  2. Parking is available onsite.
  3. Attendees cannot be barefoot or wear “open toe” shoes. Attendees must wear “closed toe” shoes such as tennis shoes or boots.

  5. Attendees will be aware that the tour may include unpleasant odors.
  6. The tour is not ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible, as there are many stairs and several uneven surfaces.
